What does it take to capture the most natural family portrait in Turks and Caicos? Is it all about the photographer? The light? The location? The poses?

Not really. Great expressions are synonymous of great portraits. Especially with young kids, it’s crucial that the little ones have fun and have the opportunity to simply BE kids. As much as I will make a fool of myself to make them laugh, the cooperation of the parents is essential.

18 years of photography experience in Turks and Caicos gives me the right to list a few Do’s and Don’ts:

PLAY WITH YOUR KIDS

They know you, they love you, they want your attention. So just play with them and everyone will have a wonderful time, creating a collection of natural and real family photos.

THERE IS a TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Don’t teach your kids a lesson during YOUR FAMILY PORTRAIT

If they play with the sand, get wet, be a little naughty, let them be, You have the entire life to educate them: if you get upset and punish them, it’s game over.

Taking pictures may not be your favorite thing, but smile and enjoy it – the time will fly!

Your kids are always observing you, they copy your attitude and mood. If it’s clear you don’t want to be pose for the camera (most times it’s your wife idea), they will do the same. So smile and play – you will be pleased to relive your wonderful memories in the years to come.

spoil their dinner if you have to

Yes, I mean it. Give your kids a snack or encourage a nap if you know you will soon be taking pictures. Who is happy when hungry and tired? (Not me!)

A few candies, a bribe or a promise (that you will keep) works wonders.

Last but not least: life is short, don’t take yourself too seriously 😉

The images below feature a great family that I photographed just a few days ago at Leeward beach. When Kelly wrote” We are definitely pretty informal, so we prefer more natural shots than dramatic shots”, my expectations for a fun session were really high. And they did not disappoint! We had a lot of fun and together we captured a natural family portrait in Turks and Caicos.

The girls are adorable but what really transpire in the pictures, it’s the wonderful connection between the parents and the kids – perfect!
